Hello classmates,
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed by former President Obama in
December of 2015. The Every Student Succeeds Act was designed to upgrade and advance the
previous No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2002. Essentially Every Student Succeeds Act
encompasses the priorities of the previous Acts with a goal of reducing education gaps and
prepares children for the ultimate goal of college and career. It specifically states, “The purpose
of this title is to provide all children significant opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-
quality education, and to close educational achievement gaps'' ("Text - S.1177 - 114th Congress
(2015-2016): Every Student Succeeds Act | Congress.gov | Library of Congress," n.d.).
Overall, legal standards need to be put into place to grant every child the education
they deserve regardless of location or family income. Each student deserves the best educational
outcome and be able to close the achievement gaps seen across the country. Theoretically a
student from metro Detroit should be granted the same educational standards and tools to learn
as a student who lives in Washington D.C. in the same grade. These set standards should prove
that geographic should not be an issue when it comes to educating students. The Every Student
Succeeds Act definitely starts the educational standards flowing in the right direction. However,
there is and will be more clear flaws as more policies are implemented.
First testing, the grade spans and subjects are essentially the same however “Every
Student Succeeds Act testing requirements are the same as under No Child Left Behind Act, but
the sanctions and consequences are very different and hugely diminished("Every Student
Succeeds Act," n.d.). Why? What does this prove? There should be consequences because this
shows the act to ensure high quality of education is not working. Another red flag for me is that,
