In Professor Emilio Marmora’s research paper Eclectic Transcending : “ An
Urban Anthropological View, ” he elaborates on how young males and females have a
lack of self motivation and have no belief in themselves, especially when it comes to
education or where they belong in the social class. He explains how “ghetto” kids usually
fall into the stereotypical lifestyle dealing with drugs, violence, alcohol, and other
delinquent actions. They don’t do well in school because they don’t see the importance
nor have an appeal towards academic success. Instead of following powerful leaders like
Martin Luther King Jr., they follow hip-hop artist who give them false hope in life and
the wrong path to follow. What happens in children’s homes also affect the life they grow
into, lack of parental appearance and dysfunctional families have a negative effect on
them, since they grow into that life they will think it’s normal. They need a role model
and someone to look up to that is successful, without that they have no path to build for
themselves.
I strongly agree with the information that Professor Marmora is giving in his
research paper. Children in today’s society do not have the confidence to be able to be
successful. There is something that holds them back whether it is the color of their skin or
a lack of motivation. Many young African Americans fall into the stereotype that is given

family and is thrown into the drug and violence lifestyle. At the end of the day, it is all up
to the child to decide whether they want to live the life they have. They can always
