1.0 ABSTRACT
In this century, the production of energy is critical to the whole world. There are
many different ways of producing energy and there are also new and more innovative
methods that are being created to this day. One of the most important sources of energy is
electrical energy. Electricity generation is the process of generating electrical energy from
other forms of energy. Electricity is most often generated at a power station by
electrochemical generators, primarily driven by heat engines fuelled by chemical combustion
or nuclear fission but also by other means such as kinetic energy of flowing water and wind.
There are also many other technologies that can be and are used to generate electricity such
asgeothermal power. This project however, focuses on a method of generating electrical
energy called piezoelectricity.
Piezoelectricity can be defined as the electric charge that accumulates in certain solid
materials such as crystals in response to an applied stress. In modern times, the demand of
renewable energy sources are much higher due to the lack of more direct sources of energy.
In this project, we make use of piezoelectric materials to generate practically usable
electricity from mechanical energy. We describe how piezoelectric harvesters provide
sufficient energy to light up street lights.This project requires piezoelectric sensors to detect
the vehicle movements and accordingly switching on the lights ahead of it.

2.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT
Piezoelectric energy harvesting is a new and innovative step in the direction of energy
harvesting. Energy harvesting has been a topic of discussion and research for three decades.
With the ever increasing and demanding energy needs, unearthing and exploiting more and
more energy sources have become the focus among the scientist, engineer etc. The
piezoelectric effect is very useful within many applications that involve the production and
detection of sound, generation of high voltages and electronic frequency generation. The
piezoelectric energy can help to solve these problems:
I. Current energy harvesting is not flexible and not durable to the everyday
developed new technology, this would bring big impact to our future energy
harvesting. Therefore, Piezoelectric energy, a new innovation of energy
harvesting will help to solve this problem as it can generate electricity when
crystalline material are subjected to external force, pressure or strain.
II. The increase of the global energy consumption level of non-renewable energy
that has risen to 80%.Piezoelectric harvesting is the eco-friendly project that
are developed consistently since they don’t create toxic waste, by
implementing this we can help increase the source of energy and decrease the
environmental impact.
III. The increase of energy demand and high consumption of energy caused by the
developed urbanization market. This problem can be controlled by taking the
advantage of the ambient energy that is being wasted, and try to harness it in
the form of electricity. Piezoelectric materials have the property of being able
to induce electrical voltage from movements, sounds and vibrations.
IV. The world runs out of non-renewable energy and they need to be replaced with
new energy harvesting that is capable to hold our daily energy usage for a long
period of time. Even though piezoelectric energy generated is not significant,
but it could pay off in the long run.

3.0 PROJECT OBJECTIVES
In this engineering team project, we are given a few topics to focus on and based on the
concept that we have chosen which piezoelectricity, we emphasize on green technology
besides tackling the issue in the campus itself as well as Perak Tengah and aim to achieve the
following objectives.
