Alpha Sigma Alpha
The community I will be investigating is Greek life, specifically the sorority I am a part
of. I am in Alpha Sigma Alpha, a sorority including 49 girls. What attracted my interest was the
girls in it; I felt I had many things in common with them such as personality, goals and interests.
ASA provides me with a sisterhood; I have created close bonds with each and every girl and to
me that is the most rewarding thing I will take away from Alpha Sigma Alpha. We also have
great philanthropies that attracted me as well. We communicate in many different ways and I
enjoy being a part of this community. In this paper I will be examining perceptions of sororities,
others perspective on Greek life and how different those opinions are from insiders, being myself
and other girls in Alpha Sigma Alpha.
Background
Every Monday the entire chapter gets together to discuss upcoming events and any other
issues. We also have groupmes to keep in touch with little groups within the sorority and a
Facebook page where all forty-nine members are able to discuss anything they desire. We are a
community because we want to be part of something; we value each other’s individual traits and
enjoy each other’s company enough that we came together in one sorority. We are given the
opportunity to give back together, through philanthropy and other community service events. We
are given a platform to make connections and make new friends outside of our sorority but at the
