At Google, managers were viewed as purveyors and facilitators of technical knowledge.
Early on the company was very .at, with few managers, directors or vice-presidents1. Their
approach to leading others was more of a “hands o2” approach. Give people direction and
support for their work ac4vi4es and let them come to you if they needed anything more1.. One
of the key tenants that con4nues to drive Google’s culture is in its value of a collegiate
environment. Not only is this evident in how their Mountain View campus is designed, but even
in the types of perks o2ered to employees (i.e. wi-9, free cafeteria, use of labs and work
facili4es, work spaces with video games, etc.) ”1. Managers were therefore, much more likened
to professors, providing technical direction and guidance, rather than business managers
