Compensation:
Production Engineers at Toyota Motors North America are typically hired in at entry level (Job
Level 14) or with one or two years of experience (Job Level 15). Entry level salaries differ based
on a candidates previous Toyota experience, such as a co-op. Most new hires were previous co-
ops at Toyota. For entry level with co-op experience the compensation currently slightly above
the average salary of $62,000. If I had control I would make the salary on the higher end at
$70,000. This will make Toyota more competitive with other car manufacturing companies and
help with retention issues. Salary increases will be based on output performance. At the
beginning of the fiscal year, goals and priorities will be set between the employee and their
supervisor and checked on quarterly and occasionally more frequently. At the end of the fiscal
year, the supervisor will determine how well the employee reached these goals. I decided on this
because for this role, most skills are acquired through hands on experience, not advanced
education. The output is directly related to the inputs put into a project. This will encourage
employees to follow through on commitments and give them a chance to sit down frequently
with their supervisors to define their career goals within the company. Helping employees define
what they want to do during their career in the company will help the company. This system will
not reward undesired behavior because it heavily involves the supervisor and is based on outputs.
The employee must list ways they plan on achieving their goals and check in with their
supervisor to make sure they are following through. I think that it is time for companies to return
to using behavioral management theory when adapting these policies.
