Write a report that solves the following problems:
There are 12 men and 15 women selected as finalists for a competitive summer program, but the
program can only take 6 people. Answer the following questions in paragraph format:
1. If the selection committee is sex-blind, how many cohorts are possible?
2. Suppose that Amy and Bob are significant others and want to be together. If the committee is
sex-blind, find the probability that they will be selected together.
3. If the selection committee instead wants 3 men and 3 women, how many cohorts are possible?
In order to get full credit, your report must include all of the following:
An introductory paragraph (or more) that restates the problem in your own words and
motivates the problem.
Paragraphs for each of the bullet points above that explain in words how you solved the
problem, as well as the solution. Formulas should be used sparingly.
A conclusion paragraph that summarizes your work and (or more) that interprets your
graph and either supports or refutes your hypothesis.
A separate sheet of paper with any calculations that you did.
Use Microsoft Word or a comparable word processor to write your report. There is no
length requirement, but notice that longer is not necessarily better! If you use any equations in your
report, use Equation Editor to typeset them. Please also use the “Project Template” on the Course
Documents page of eLearning. (There is a sample project for a different prompt on the course
webpage.)
This paper is not formalyou may use a snarky tone or make it a creative narrative if you
words. Submit the assignment in class or via e-mail.
