Should the US adopt a nation flat tax or continue with a
progressive income tax?
At first thought a flat tax sounds fair and easy. A flat tax is simply one tax rate that
applies to everyone no matter what their income may be. With a flat tax rate, you also do not
have any deductions, no loopholes, and no tax shelters. A flat tax, applied across the board,
would increase the tax rate on people with lower incomes, including many people who currently
pay little or no income tax. For those reasons, according to toughnickel.com, most flat rate tax
proposals are currently modified tax proposals. The modified proposals include, an income level
beneath which no taxes are paid, a small number of allowed deductions, and different rules for
business income.
Twenty-four countries currently use a flat tax. Of those 24 countries, several of them
