EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Rice price turmoil is common scenery. But as our economy is still agriculture based and rice is our
primary source of carbohydrate, Price of rice should be stable. Though we produce plenty of rice
but there is huge price gap between paddy and rice. The aim of the research is to find out why
there is gap and is it intentional and most of all who is getting all the profit.
The report is prepared on the basis of both primary and secondary sources of information. For
primary data collection we visited few villages in Gazipur district and we interviewed several
farmers, middleman and millers personally. For secondary data collection we had to rely on
newspapers and internet.
Considering all areas together, it was found that paddy price was the paddy price was the highest
(tk1800/quintal) at procurement center and the lowest (1337tk/quintal) at nearby market. This
indicates that the government sets procurement price higher than that of market price and cost of
production, the supports are likely to be different for farmer in different regions.
However, at the village level, about 76% of the road to rice mills nearby town is not at good
location. About 49% of farmer can sell 0.5 to 5 ton and the farmers who can sell above 10 tons is
only 7%. With respect to our farmers, our transport and storage facilities might need to overcome
their barriers to help out farmers.
At the end, we suggest few recommendation like reducing import price for fertilizers, fuel and
seeds, irrigation cost of water LSD at nearby place, more quota allotment and finally create
awareness about government LSD project.
