One element in President Obama’s Message that is important to the economy is
education. “What one learns will have a big impact on what he or she earns: the unemployment
rate for Americans with a college degree or more is only about half the national average, and the
incomes of college graduates are twice as high as those without a high school diploma.
There is a correlation between the unemployment rate and the number of educated
individuals in America. As former President Obama stated, individuals are more likely to gain
employment with a college degree. Which is becoming more and more unattainable with the
current nation’s economy inflating the prices for college education.
In addition, Healthy economies strive on job creation and opportunity, and attainable
education makes those possible. Without employment, the economy fails to increase income.
More importantly, a growing labor force increases the overall well-being of the economy
because it creates revenue. Which in turn increases productivity. Humans are a resource, and to
tie in the fundamental concept of economics, they are a scarce resource. More jobs lead to an
increase in specialization and it allows for a more efficient division of labor. All of which is
important because this optimizes utilization, which is essentially a top economic goal. To
conclude, employment is a crucial aspect to a prosperous and healthy economy, and therefore so
is education. By earning an education, we can go on and help others and therefore the economy,
and then those individuals can do the same.
If it were possible to make two years of community college free, pursuing a college
education would become “common” and individuals would likely be more motivated and have
