Poverty
In the passage I just read “What is Poverty,” by Jo Goodwin Parker, he’s talking about how
this woman that has nothing is living her daily life with her and her three children. The writer
appeals to all three criteria pathos, ethos, and logos reasons being in pathos he’s giving us this sob
story that makes you feel sorry for the person he is writing about. In ethos he is conducting, from
what I can gather, an interview with this woman which would be a very credible source who better
to tell you what poverty really is than the person actually living in poverty. Also in the logos
category there’s a lot of logic behind this essay he’s getting information based straight from the
person that’s actually living in poverty. The author in this essay is trying to inform us that poverty
is real and is happening around us and we have a decision to help the situation or not. Mr. Parker
is also giving very descriptive and vivid imaging through the words he writes which allows you to
put yourself in the lady’s shoes to see how she lives. This essay makes you think twice of what
poverty really means and that it is not just a homeless man on the side of the street it can also be a
whole family that can be the ones on the streets struggling.
