The Dimensions of Cultural Potency 2
For this assignment, I decided to write about the cultural potency of a song entitled
“Alright” by rapper Kendrick Lamar. The song “Alright” was released to radio stations as the
album’s fourth single on June 30, 2015. The song is about having hope, overall. Both the track
and its music video received acclaim from critics, highlighting their message in the social
context of current times. The song was associated with the Black Lives Matter movement after
several youth-led protests were heard chanting the chorus. “Alright” received four nominations
at the 58th Grammy Awards: Song of the Year, Best Music Video, Best Rap Performance and
Best Rap Song, winning the two latter. I chose to write about the beautifully written song,
“Alright” because I believe that it has all five dimensions of cultural potency and is extremely
relevant.
