POP ART
Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the mid-twentieth century, in the
1950s, especially in the United Kingdom and the United States.
It came up from some artists as a reaction against the abstract expressionism,
which was considered incomprehensible for the common people.
The term Pop Art is recognized by the British critic, Lawrence Alloway, who in
1958, used it to refer to “folk art” in his essay The Arts and the Mass Media. However,
this movement was born in London, England, with one of Richard Hamilton’s works
called “Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?” (1956), a
collage considered the first work of Pop Art.
This is known for the use of images of popular culture taken from the media, such
as advertising, comic books, "worldly" cultural objects and cinema.
Among other artists, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein are the most
