Hello classmates,
Gun control has been an important topic of discussion and in the past couple years some
politicians want to rewrite the laws that regulate the use of firearms throughout the Nation.
Measures have been taken in hopes to prevent future incidents from occurring such as mass
shootings, senseless violence with firearms and police brutality to name a few. One of the
leading interest organizations that are an advocate for gun control and the 2nd Amendment is the
National Rifle Association (NRA). The NRA was founded in 1871 by Colonel William C.
Church and General George Wingate ("NRA | About the NRA," n.d.). The NRA institution was
founded in 1990 and is a tax-exempt organization to raise money to fund gun safety and
educational projects for the public ("NRA | About the NRA," n.d.). The NRA can do a lot to
influence Congress or the President with one key factor, whether or not these respective groups
support guns or not. President Trump has made it publically known that he is in full support of
the 2nd Amendment. In an article, the NRA stated, “As a concealed carry permit holder, 2nd
Amendment advocate, and father of two enthusiastic hunters and shooters, Trump may well be
the most pro-gun President to date” ("NRA-ILA | Gun Owners Welcome Donald J. Trump as
President of the United States," 2017). One method interests groups can use is supporting people
during their campaigns. The NRA was one of the earliest and most supportive groups to stand
behind President Trump throughout his presidential campaign ("NRA-ILA | Gun Owners
Welcome Donald J. Trump as President of the United States," 2017).
Another tactic interests groups can use is supporting or going against legislation. There is
a huge bill that was recently introduced in the House in terms of the gun world. The Hearing
