“Woodchucks,’’ by Maxine Kumin is a short poem about a character who is hunting for
Woodchucks and it leads to a series of brutal killings. At the beginning of the poem, the speaker
has a merciful and humane solution for exterminating the Woodchucks. As the poem
progresses, frustration and failure begins to change the woman’s merciful tactics for killing the
Woodchucks. The female hunter takes a shotgun and begins shooting the Woodchucks. The
