Poetry Assignment
I want you to do is to go to a library and take out three books of poetry. The books can be
related or unrelated, but there have to be three books. I want you to be able to discuss why you
chose the books that you did. I also want you to read some of the books that you take out,
perhaps finding poems that you can share with the class as interesting, exceptional, troubling,
or downright bad. It is important that you both do some research in finding a book that might
interest you, but I think it’s equally important to browse the poetry books you come across in
trying to find poetry books. There are two primary library catalog systems. The one in the New
York Public library places English poetry in section 811. At the Queensborough library, poetry is
less centralized, often in the P subsections. Happy browsing.
