Poe: One of the Greatest
Edger Allen Poe was one of the greatest writers of all time. He wrote in a style that still
admired today. His writing is always seen as dark and twisted. His two works The Oval Portrait
and Silence - A Fable are one of my two favorite works that he created. Poe was a drunk who
lost almost his whole family to tuberculosis. His ads a little of his life to each story he writes.
Based off of his previous life events he can write to ones darker side. The side of you that makes
you feels things and the part of you that is scared of certain things, such as demons. In this essay
I will be comparing and contrasting the two works, Oval Portrait and SilentA Fable, one can
see many similarities and many differences in these two writings making Edger Allen Poe one of
the greatest writers because of the many characters, the different settings, and the tone of the
story
In Silence - A Fable, the main character is a Demon and a Man. You can just tell by the
two characters alone how deep and dark Poe can write. Talking about a Demon is one thing but
then also having the Demon be with a Man is never a good thing. These two characters are
greatly different than those in Oval Portrait. We can see how the characters are used in the story
with this quote:
ursed, with the curse of silence, the river, and the lilies, and the winds, and the
forest, and the heaven, and the thunder, and the sighs of the water-lilies. And they
became accursed, and were still. And the moon ceased to totter up its pathway to
heaven – and the thunder died away – and the lightning did not flash – and the

clouds hung motionless – and the waters sunk to their level and remained – and
the trees ceased to rock –and the water lilies sighed no more – and the murmur
was heard no longer from them […] And mine eyes fell upon the countenance of
the man, and his countenance was wan with terror […] And the man shuddered,
and turned his face away, and fled afar off, in haste, so that I beheld him no more.
(Poe 226)
This is describing the meeting between the Demon and the human. It depicts how the Man looks
