Great Leaders
When people think of great leaders’, individuals such as Alexander, Cesar, George Washington,
and Abraham Lincoln come to mind. These leaders were all great, but they are remembered because of
their action during )mes of war. In )mes of peace it takes a truly remarkable, yet different type of
leader to make his mark. However, some men are solely bred for war, and wouldn’t do well in )mes of
peace. Throughout this semester, in Plutarch’s Lives, we have learned about many di+erent great men
that existed in ancient Greece. In these stories two men stand out that would have been excep)onal in
)mes of peace, and the other would have a been a terrible leader, Pericles, and Themistocles.
Pericles was a just, and honorable man. He was tutored by the philosopher Anaxagoras, and
learned to put science and reason above supers))on. (Mini-Theme 7) This allowed him to think about
the problems that Athens was facing, and come up with the best solu)ons. He was a ruler in Athens
throughout )mes of war, but it is the )mes of peace in Athens that his true value can be seen. As I stated
