I chose to write my discussion post on Plato and his impact on modern day psychology.
He studied life, love, dreams, reality, illusions, and so much more. He has had such a
considerable influence on those we know to be the founders of many of the psychological
principles and theories we know of today such and Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. Some of those
theories which lead back to Plato and his original thinking and idea on psychology.
Plato believed that because pleasure appeared to be good it must be part of the soul.
“Plato seems to argue that the part of the soul that desires pleasure is the part that is deceived by
optical illusion (Moss, 2006).” This is linked to modern psychology in the sense that what is
pleasurable to the mind or the eye may not be pleasurable to the body. For example, if someone
eats cake, and believes it to be good, they may want more. The person is now full, but the cake is
pleasurable to the eye and the taste sounds good to the mind, but is not good for the body. Once
