Introduction
When brought down to brass tacks, a pit bull is merely a dog. It is a dog that depends
on human beings to provide it’s needs, it is a social dog that requires attention and to
have its human close to it. A pit bull is a loving animal that will do anything for its
human. This should be celebrated. It should be acknowledged as an asset to the
human race. Man’s best friend, right? These dogs are not only man’s best friend, they
are known to be man’s lifeline, man’s very best friend and sometimes, the saver of a
man’s life. I intend to explain how we, as a society, can go about elevating these dogs
from the awful description and personas that have been thrust upon them – back to just
being a dog.
There is currently legislature in the country that is trying to have the effect of banning all
pit bulls from homes. This legislature is called Breed Specific Legislation. It targets
specifically the pit bull. Pit bulls all over the country right now are being removed from
their homes, taken to a facility, and being destroyed – for the good of society. This is a
problem. It is a problem because many of these dogs have done nothing wrong.
According to Julie Scheidegger controlled studies have not identified pit bull-type dogs
“as disproportionately dangerous.” They are being destroyed for the simple fault of
being a pit bull.
