Physical Activity, Sleep, Dietary Intake, and Obesity in HS201 Students
100 points
10 points for survey +90 points for report
STEP1: HYPOTHESIS GENERATION 4 points
Please write your one-sentence hypothesis. A hypothesis should include the independent
and dependent variables and state what direction you think that relationship will be or how
you think two groups will be different. It is a statement, not a research question.
1a. IN ONE SENTENCE write your hypothesis.
My hypothesis is that moderate physical activity is a strong positive correlation to
increased intake of fruits and vegetables.
1b. What is the independent variable?
Moderate physical activity
1c. What is the dependent variable?
Intake of fruits and vegetables
STEP 2: DATA COLLECTION 20 points
2. All of the data collected was using an online survey. (7 points)
2a. What is one strength and one weakness of this data collection method?
One strength is that the survey is anonymous so people don’t feel like they should lie
and can be honest with their data. One weakness is that online surveys are generally
geared to and available to specific populations, therefore are not accurate indicators of
the general population.
2b. There are approximately 1500 Health Sciences majors at OU. How generalizable do you think
the results of this survey are the rest of Health Sciences majors? Explain your reasoning
including a comment on the sample size.
No it is not reliable to towards to all Health Science majors because the survey results
had not indication of how many of the participants were Health Science majors at OU.
28% of the population does not apply to the general population of 1500 Health
Science majors, especially since the majors of the survey respondents was unknown.
3. Describe specifically how the following variables were operationalized, that is, how were
these variables measured in the survey? (6 points)
3a. Sleep
The sleep variable was measured in hours of sleep on a scale from 4 – 12.
3b. Fruit and vegetable intake
Fruit and vegetable intake was measured in amount of cups a day on a scale from 0
-4.
1
3c. Physical activity
Vigorous activity was measured from minutes per week on a scale of 0 – 3000 with
moderate activity measured also from minutes per week o n a scale of 0 – 3360.
Strength training was measured in days on a scale of 0 – 7.
4. Choose one of the variables listed in #2 (above) and identify a stronger way of
assessing this variable. (3 points)
Physical activity can be measured better by how many days per week it occurs and
how many hours of activity during those days.
5. In this study, obesity is measured with BMI. (4 points)
5a. How was BMI measured?
BMI was measured through the direct relation of height and weight.
5b. What is a strength and weakness of this measure of obesity?
A strength is a convenient and inexpensive way with no specific training needed to
assess a BMI score. The weakness is that it does not involve any direct measure of
lean or fat body tissue, as well as water retention.
STEP 3: RESULTS 44 points
6.a. Using the data from class, fill in Tables 1 & 2 below. Be sure to include labels or units
for each variable! Choose two other variables to add to Table 1 that also describe the
participants in this study.
