Procedure Part A, Structured Inquiry:
1. Your Fearless leader did this: Prepare 1000mL of baking soda solution
(bicarbonate) by mixing 1000mL distilled water with 3 grams baking soda
(0.3% solution)
2. Pour 100mL solution into a cup and label, “w/ CO2
3. In another cup just add 100mL of distilled water and label, “w/o CO2
4. Label your cups: and
a. In both cups add a small drop of diluted liquid soap
5. Set cups aside
6. Using a hole punch, cut out 10 leaf discs for each cup, a total of 20 leaf discs
7. Put 10 leaf discs into a syringe and replace the piston.
8. Carefully push the piston down to get almost all air out, but be careful not to
crush your leaf discs.
9. Pull about 5mL of solution into syringe.
10. Create a vacuum with your thumb and draw out the air from the leaf tissue.
11. You might have to repeat the vacuum until all the discs sink.
12. Pour discs and solution back into the appropriate cup and cover until all your
cups are ready!
13. Put both cups under your light source and start timer.
