Phineas Gage Veronika Espinoza
Psych 001- 82180
Phineas Gage is famous in Psychology due to his brain injury. In 1848, while
tamping, he hit the tamping iron on a rock causing a spark that lit the gun
powder, causing an explosion. The explosion caused the tamping iron to shoot
out of the hole and through Phineas Gage’s face, skull, and brain. The Frontal
Lobe was damaged severely. The Frontal lobe is responsible for personalities,
emotions, and problem-solving. It is also responsible for some parts of speech.
After the incident and he was healed, he showed very different characteristics.
He was unable to control his emotions, his personality suffered, and he was
unable to control himself. Before the accident, he was not this way. He seemed
like a great foreman, knowledgeable, and respectful. Without control of his
emotions, he began telling it like was at any time. He had no filter from his
thoughts to his actions. He was no longer able to be a foreman, but showed
great interest in animals and other living things. He is definitely an important
brain-injury survivor.
