Frances Ha
The story of Frances Ha awakens the viewer by showing the true feminist side of the world
and how women are objectified. It clearly depicts the struggle of a girl who chooses not to
surrender to the male dominant society. In the very beginning of the film France Ha’s
boyfriend is trying to dominate her by forcing Frances to move in with him and before even
she agrees to it, he dumps the idea of purchasing two pets without even her consent on her.
This is the scene where she is being objectified as Dan (her boyfriend) forces her in every
aspect. This is also quite obvious when she is scared to pick up the phone call from her best
friend in front of him. The camera is speaking for Frances and us as viewer feel the pressure
she is feeling in that relationship.
Throughout the film Frances is portrayed to me as a rebel, a rebel against the dominance of
male, rebel against submissiveness that most women do such as her best friend Sofi who
submitted to Patch (her boyfriends) success so that she could be in a safe zone. She
