Coronavirus Reflection

In late December a Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was discovered in Wuhan, China, a
major industrial city of 11 million people. The outbreak was discovered to originate in a wet
food market in central Wuhan and has spiralled out of control. At this point, there has been a
confirmed 565 deaths and almost 30,000 people infected globally. The virus has spread to 25
countries worldwide and has the potential to become a serious global pandemic, and may affect
the world in many social and economic ways.
In 2003, a very similar virus called SARS broke out worldwide. Just like the Novel
CoronaVirus, SARS originated in Asia and was a strain of CoronaVirus itself. The SARS virus
was extremely harmful to the global economy and to the mental health of those dealing with the
outbreak. In the midst of the SARS outbreak, it was estimated that Asian states lost $12 - 18
billion USD from a mass decrease of travel, tourism and retail sales across the continent. The
SARS outbreak, mass panic caused the people of China to reduce their population movement,
and changed purchasing trends, affecting various industries across the country. When the World
Health Organization (WHO) announced Beijing as an epidemic area international business and
