Underage drinking is a phenomenon that interests me because I myself, was in a situation
where I had to face legal consequences for my participation in the act. Before the night of the
incident, I had not thought too much about the consequences of my actions. Drinking socially
was always normal to me. If my friends and I wanted to hang out, there was nearly always some
kind of alcohol around mostly unbeknownst to our parents. If they did know, none of them ever
sat us down and spoke to us about the potential consequences.
According to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, minors who purchase, attempt
to purchase, possess, or consume alcoholic beverages, as well as minors who are intoxicated in
public or misrepresent their age to obtain alcoholic beverages, are said to have violated underage
drinking laws. Minors who violate the laws face an array of consequences including a Class C
misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $500. They must take an alcohol awareness class as well
