Persuasive Speech Outline
Title: Gun Control (Con)
I. Introduction:
A. Attention getting opening: It is a fact: every civilian wants to
feel safe, no matter what the situation is. So imagine, you are in
your home, it is 3 a.m., and you hear a rustling downstairs, and
then you hear a window break. Your husband and or wife
acknowledges the sound, asking, “Did you hear that? I think
someone is in the house.” Quietly stepping down the steps, you
peek around the corner that exposes the living room area and
notice this man (show image of a burglar in a home to the
audience, he has a weapon in his hand but it is not easily
visible). Your family’s safety is at stake, what do you do
(pathos)?
B. Reason your audience would be interested in this speech:
Increasing publicity of gun related homicides through news
coverage and social media have sparked political debates on
gun control that have reached the masses like never before.
Engaging in a discussion of opposing severe gun control will
allow you to enrich yourself in this side of the debate.
C. Thesis statement: In the previously stated scenario, you would
have had very few options to choose from while waiting on the
police: secure your family in one room and wait quietly, ask the
intruder to leave (not likely), or fight back. If you were to fight
back, not saying that you would HAVE to use your means of
combat, your courses of action could include: hand-to-hand
combat, a baseball bat, knife, or 9rearm (show image of each
CoA on slides, labeled as A-D). If you live in an area that is very
distant from the most nearby police department, your reliance
on law enforcement may be thrown out of the window, leaving
you most obligated to use option D, IF it is at your disposal.
Today, this is the case for a fair amount of Americans, yet there
is an unfair amount of laws being put in place that make option
D seem far-fetched. “Gun possession and the Law”, 9rearm
statistics such as “Gun-related deaths by Year”, and brief history
of our 2nd Amendment right granted by the United States
Constitution will be reviewed – reviewed as a means to open
your eyes to the thought of a country that actually granted us
our rights – a thought shared by the writers of our Constitution.
D. Overview (State the main points you will cover):
1. Main Point A: Gun possession and the Law
2. Main Point B: Firearm statistics
3. Main Point C: 2nd Amendment aspect
Transition to the body of the speech: With that, let’s take a look at these
main points of debate.
II. Body:
Main Point A: It is no surprise that the Law will always place
obstacles in front of CIVILIAN 9rearm possession.
Sub points:
1. Barack Obama voted against a measure to lower the
Firearms Owners identification card age minimum from the age of
21 to 18, a measure designed to assist young people in the
military, brought about for discussion in 2003 in the Illinois Senate
(ethos) [1].
