Alright, raise your hand if you are someone who really does not care what he eats? Okay.
Who here would say that they are someone who basically hates anything and everything that has
to do with exercise? Okay, great. Well seventh grade, eighth grade, and ninth grade nick used to
say the same things. I was the same weight I am now, about 8 inches shorter, and my waist was
wider than my legs were long. I was eating pizza and ice cream to my heart’s content, drinking
venti, Starbucks frappucinos, and McDonald’s was a daily request. I see the majority of kids my
age with similar eating habits.
Okay, so you are probably saying: “all this change is due to puberty.” Not exactly;
puberty definitely helped, but I would be nowhere near where I am now, if I did not make a
lifestyle change.
How is this all important or relevant? I am going to tell you not only how, but why you
should start living a healthier lifestyle. Most people are probably saying: “why would I change
anything up? I look fine and I feel fine. And why would I need to exercise? I practice a high
school sport.” Okay maybe so, but what you cannot see, are the damaging effects an unhealthy
lifestyle can have on the inside of your body. These effects not only worsen with age, but will
start to show on the outside as well.
Let’s look at the average McQuaid boy’s diet and habits. You wake up, you’re tired and groggy,
and force yourself to get dressed. If you eat breakfast, you probably grab 3 servings-too-many of
that sugar bomb cereal. You’re up and ready to get to school. First period, you’re good. Halfway
into Second, you’re still feeling decent. Then the last half of second period comes around and
you’re all of a sudden tired, distracted, and STARVING. Finally, it’s FLEX. You and your
buddies walk over to Hess grab that Soda (or a not-any-better “diet” soda), a donut (or two), and
