Social Media Addiction
Social Media is taking over the world ranging from an audience to young adolescents, to
adults. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are just a few of the many social media
websites that are popular and keeping people connected with the internet. Facebook is one of the
most popular social media websites in the world allowing anyone of the age 13 and up to create
an account, with a valid email address. Facebook offers many users to upload pictures and post
status’s, games that can be played, messenger with friends, videos on everything imaginable,
even including live breaking news, and many more. Facebook has a huge range of audience
going from big businesses and corporations, universities and schools, and plain leisure fun for
adolescents and adults. Students, Businesses, and a worldwide audience are able to use the power
of Facebook to keep page members updated with their business or university, worldwide news
and breaking news, and for leisure fun with messaging friends, uploading pictures, and watching
videos.
Facebook took over the social media world dating back to February 4, 2004, created by a
sophomore Harvard student, Mark Zuckerberg (Bellis). Zuckerberg originally created a website
for Harvard students called “Facemash” allowing students to match faces next to each other and
choose whether they were “hot” or “not”. Zuckerberg uploaded pictures from student IDs. The
website was only running for a couple days until Harvard executives shut it down. Zuckerberg
faced serious charges of breach of security, violating copyrights and violating individual privacy

for stealing the student photos he used to populate the site. He also faced expulsion from Harvard
University for his actions. However, all charges were eventually dropped. (Bellis) After this
closing of “Facemash” lead Zuckerberg to create Facebook, now one of the most popular
enterprises in the world. Facebook led to huge success for Zuckerberg, ranking him at spot 4 for
richest Americans on Forbes with a net worth of $71 Billion (Forbes).
Businesses and Universities often need to get information out to a big audience. How else
should they do that besides some plain ads in a magazines or newspaper of having to send out an
email to everyone at the school. Facebook offers pages that allows these enterprises to reach a
big audience. Many businesses use Facebook to get their ads out to the audience so more people
can come to their business. Many business companies have an official Facebook page where they
are able to post their hours, have costumers write reviews, and advertise their products and
