Abstract
Multiple studies have revealed that when mass media portrays societal group members as
stereotypical, one’s thoughts, behaviors and emotions about the group can be affected (Mastro,
2009). Of recent, examinations of news coverage and intergroup attitudes have focused on the
impact of stories concerning Islamic extremism and terrorism. Das, Bushman, Bezemer, Kerkhof
and Vermeulen (2009) conducted three studies suggesting that media coverage of Islamic
