Behavioral Goal Statement 1: Be a More Efficient Communicator
The first behavioral goal statement that I would set for myself in my managerial role and
work life is to become a more efficient communicator. Efficient communication is characterized
by both expressing my ideas to others and understanding what others are saying to me. There are
a variety of reasons why I selected this goal. From a general perspective, communication is
essential when working in a managerial role or any position within the workplace. If
communication is efficient, it can promote productivity and enable the development of effective
strategies to resolve workplace conflicts (Mind Tools Ltd, 2017). However, inefficient
communication can lead to confusion, exacerbate conflict, and ultimately limit the productivity
of an organization. Therefore, I want to improve my communication efficiency because any
improvement in this area can support my success as a manager.
In addition, I made this a goal because it is consistent with some of the areas for
improvement that I identified through my previous self-assessments. Based on my Myers-Briggs
Personality Type Indicator (MBTI) profile, one area that I could improve on is Sensing, since I
only have a slight preference for Sensing, rather than a strong preference (Cpp Inc, n.d.). I do not
always use all of my senses when communicating, which can cause me to miss important
information that the other person is expressing through their body language. As a result, I do not
always respond in a way that effectively expresses my ideas and makes sense to them. This can
lead to inefficient communication. Thus, because sensing is an opportunity for improvement for
me, it makes sense to set communication efficiency as a goal.
