One of the most modern debates in the sports world is whether college athletes should be
paid. This debate has been an ongoing argument for decades. “The NCAA (National Collegiate
Athletic Association) formed in 1905, set bylaws requiring student-athletes to be amateurs in
order to be eligible for intercollegiate athletic competitions.” (Schneider, 2001). The NCAA is a
non-profit organization that overseas all collegiate sport activities as well as it controls how they
are managed at affiliated schools. Now you might wonder what it means by “requiring student–
athletes to be amateurs?” Well what does amateur mean towards athletics? Being an amateur
athlete means that the athlete isn’t getting paid to play sports. Professional athletes are athletes
who get paid to play. Therefore, should college athletes get paid to play? Should they be
considered professional athletes? There are many pros and cons of college athletes getting paid.
