Patriarchy in the Gilead Republic
The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian novel written by Margaret Atwood in 1985.
The Handmaid’s Tale talks about The Gilead Republic which is a version of the
United States overtaken by fundamentalist Christians after an attack on the congress,
assassinating the president and controlling the government. The origin of power in the
Gilead Republic is religion, military, and constitution. Also, regarding what has
mentioned in the book, the Gilead Republic is greatly patriarchy which means men
are superior and have all crucial power in the society. After theocrats came to the
power, the roles of women entirely had changed in the Gilead Republic. Women are
inferior compare to men and have dominated by men, resulting in a loss of power to
control their daily lives. Women had lost their rights, so their only purpose were
