The first record to document the resurrection of the dead is the Bible. Consequently, it
would be rational to rank zombies among the infamous Biblical monsters, alongside
Cockatrice and Behemoth. If audacious enough, one can even correlate the ability to
reclaim vitality after death of zombies with that of the gods. These divine monstrosities
have haunted (and hunted) humans unremittingly and eventually ripened into one of the
most ghoulish monsters in history. But predating that historic image of zombies, before the
humongous hordes of walking rotten membranes, there was only one cannibalistic
reincarnation to begin with: Patient Zero.
“Zombies” is the appellation given to the deceased who come back to life to feed on the
living. In popular culture, zombies possess various titles: soulless corpses, the undead, the
living dead, the Walking Dead. According to Zombiepedia, these mis-recreations can even
be categorized: normal Generic Zombie, agile Runners, stealthy Stalkers and leading
Bonies. Despite diverse classifications, all zombies originated from one common source,
which is Patient Zero – the first zombie. Fictional works about the reincarnated often omit
or merely mention this creature. However, from a personal perspective, Patient Zero is the
most noteworthy, as well as the un-deadliest; for Patient Zero alone represents all the
Bringers of Apocalypse.
Patient Zero is the white horseman with a crown and a bow, a deception of devil, a
conqueror. In the beginning, the first zombie was compelled to wear the carcass congeneric
with human. He talks. He breathes. He feels. We may misconstrue him as resembling a
family member, a neighbour, or a stranger. However, Patient Zero is certainly inhuman.
Moreover, the initially infected unintentionally beguiles us with his disguise. He conceals
his malignant fangs and his unmitigated blood thirst. This dormant power within Patient
Zero, when revived, can enslave humanity and ravage the entire world.
Patient Zero is the red horseman equipped with a single sword. Maybe a single sword is
enough to cover the world with blood. The omnipotent power has been enlivened as a
sharp blade that shall reap the lives of man-kind. This cursed soul besieges our race with
the instinct of an animal. She chases. She claws. She devours. Although food is
unnecessary for Patient Zero’s survival, she flavourlessly enjoys human flesh and
tastelessly gulps human blood. If the sword is a pen, then the whole world will be a
crimson canvas, painted by the anonymous first reanimated corpse. Glimpsing at this art
