Amoebiasis
CASE PRESENTATION
A four-month-old male infant from a rural
district in Khorramabad, southwest Iran was
brought to the emergency room of the
Lorestan University of Medical Sciences
Hospital with history of refusal of feeds,
hyperactive bowel sound, vomiting, and
change in stool texture. The patient also had
episodes of retching and mild abdominal
distension. The mother suffered abdominal
pain and had history of diarrhea.
CASE PRESENTATION
Direct examination of fresh fecal samples
using Lugol’s iodine solution and the
concentration technique showed E. histolytica
cysts and trophozoites with red blood cells
(occult blood) and many leukocytes.

Amoebiasis
Causative agent : Entamoeba histolytica
Routes of infection:
Food and water contaminated by faeces
Oral and anal sexual practices.
Occurance:
The parasite occurs in 2 forms:
”” A trophozoite form which is active adult
form seen in the tissues and diarrhoeal
stools; and
”” A cystic form seen in formed stools but
not in the tissues.
Morphologic features
The lesions of amoebiasis
include
1. amoebic colitis
2. Amoeboma
3. amoebic liver abscess
4. spread of lesions to other sites
Amoebic colitis
Clinical course
1. Amebic colitis is gradual in onset
2. Diarrhea
3. cramping abdominal pain, watery or bloody
