Topic: Corruption at Rikers
Why is this topic important to me?
This topic is important to me because although I’ve never been arrested or stepped foot inside Rikers
island I feel that what is going on is unjust and needs to be stopped. After watching the Kalief Browder
documentary on Netflix I became inspired on learning more about the corruption at Rikers island. The
Kalief Browder has impacted me because not only did it inform me about something very serious going
inside of New York’s largest correctional facility, but it also informed me and educated me enough to
make this topic something I want to learn more to then educate others about.
What steps will I take to acquire reliable sources?
The first step I am taking on finding reliable sources for my research is learning the difference between
primary and secondary sources. I am also using the resources given to me by my professor such as
websites and access to the library. I was able to obtain my first two primary sources at the library when
visiting with my class. To continue finding reliable secondary sources I will make sure to look into
anything that analyzes events that have occurred at Rikers Island, such as newspaper articles and
