1. How well does Northouse’s (2021) definition of leadership (Topic 1) explain Dr. Henry’s
influence? (~300 words)
Answer: Leaders are visionary individuals who shares their own vision with others and make
them believe in their vision through influence. According to Northouse (2021), “Leadership is a
process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.
(57). Dr. Bonnie Henry faced the challenge of her lifetime as she started as the Provincial Health
Officer 2 years before the pandemic had started yet she has been so successful in containing the
spread of the virus that her recognition reached internationally. Dr. Henry’s influences were
empathetic and highly interactive with the general people of B.C and also with the health care
workers who were under her command. She believed in absolute transparency with people which
helped her to gain the trust of people and became someone to be looked up to as a leader in the
crisis rather someone from the authority. Her messages contained the rationale or science of the
necessity of following the health orders but also with a deep note towards caring for each other
in the community and becoming together in the crisis. Dr. Henry deliberately promoted the
importance of altruism in her messages in times of emergency and supporting the communities
that may face stigma and negativity due to the surge of the virus. Dr. Henry believed in the
power of communication and she held strong ground against the usage of force against free will
as The New York Times quoted her “If you tell people what they need to do and why, and give
them the means to do it, most people will do what you need” (Porter, 2020). In the end, Dr.
Henry’s strategy of transparent and consistent communication with the people has helped her to
gain the trust and respect among the people which have helped her to influence the people to
follow the health care guidelines.
