Over and Under Representation among
African Americans In the Criminal Justice system
Christopher Houston
Many people would argue that the United States has made huge strides in making this
country equal and fair. I agree, as Civil Rights acts were set in place so that no matter your race,
religion, or sex you are protected from discrimination, and shall not be discriminated against.
But, even after laws were put into place to instill equality among the American people,
discrimination and especially racism are still alive in today’s society.
Over and under representation among African Americans apply to both sides of the law.
This paper will talk about how African Americans are overrepresented in different aspects of the
criminal side of our justice system. It will also cover how African Americans are
underrepresented on the judicial side of our justice system, from police on the streets to
