OUTLOOK OF THE INDIAN ECONOMY (in 2-5 years to come)

Introduction
In our increasingly global and interdependent world, forecasting the performance of an
economy 2-5 years down the line is not an easy task. However, reflecting on the current
state of diverse aspects of an economy, one can get hints on where the economy might be
headed towards in the coming years.
Through this paper, I intend to share my opinion on the outlook of Indian economy over
the next 2-5 years – through briefly introducing the current state of affairs in India and the
necessary steps that would be required for a strong/better performing Indian economy for
time to come.
Current State
India (together with other BRICS nations), has been in the spotlight as a rapidly growing
economy with great possibilities for some time now. But has it really been “growing”
recently? Well, the answer might differ as per different groups. For me, considering the
extremely high inflation rates (especially food inflation), rising prices, increasing crime
rate, stable (or increasing) unemployment rates, rising rupee and the resulting political
dissatisfaction, the “growth” factor of Indian economy lags far behind the expectations that
the world has from India. And one major reason that lies behind the current state of Indian
economy is its “reactive” nature rather than the much needed “proactive” nature towards
the elements that support “growth”. One example of this trait of Indian economy are highly
unplanned cities, which although is flooded with commercial and residential properties,
