“Our Sea of Islands” by Epeli Hau’ofa
1. THEME:(in brief) What is the central theme of this reading? If there is more
than one reading assigned, in what ways do the readings share a common
focus, or speak to a related issue(s)?
There is two central themes on Our Sea of Islands reading. The first is the national
governments and regional and international diplomacy. The other one is unnoticed or
ignored actions made by the ordinary people, peasants, and proletarians because of the
poor system from the government system and the authorities and ignorance. Since
these two topics are interrelated, then the theme of this reading focuses on the lives of
people in the Pacific being affected by government policies and how people treat each
other according to their status. This reading also points out a proper, holistic, and
honorable view of Oceania.
