Psychometric Testing – An Organizational Perspective
Definitions
A psychometric test is a standard way of measuring of mental performance.
· According to The British Psychological Society, ‘a psychometric test is any procedure on
the basis of which inferences are made concerning a person’s capacity, propensity or
liability to act, react, experience, or to structure or order thought or behavior in particular
ways’.[1]
Psychometric test is any standardized procedure for measuring sensitivity or memory or
intelligence or aptitude or personality etc.[2]
It is primarily concerned with the study of measurement instruments such as
questionnaires and tests. A traditional way of conducting psychometric test is with the help
of Likert Scale (Rensis Likert, 1932).
Individuals appearing for psychometric test are given questionnaires of the above format
where they have to tick the option they find most suitable to their behaviour and
personality. Thus the conductors of the test get an idea about the attitude and intrinsic
psychology of the individuals.
Usage in Organizations
Psychometric tests have gained prime importance in the corporate world because of its
relevance. Almost 70% organizations including colleges, corporates and public sector units
use psychometric tests while employing human resource.
Reasons for using psychometric test:
Psychological Analysis: Psychometric test is used in most organizations during
pre-interview screening. It provides the employer of the organization with valuable
insights of an employee before they are hired. It is a very good predictor of how they
would react in different situations.
