Order, Freedom, and Equality via President Trump.
After visiting the whitehouse.gov website, it looks to me like the Trump administration is very much pro-order,
emphasizing safety and security above all. I found several references to where he stands in the weekly address for May
16, 2017 where he states: “We need a government that spends on the right things – the safety, security, and well-being
of our people.” He ties in economic growth with order with the statement “the big thing for me is economic growth,
which is not possible without safety and security.”
One thing that stood out for me was the lack of reference to social equality. What I did see, to me, was reflective of
implied economic equality through reduced industrial regulation and domestic job growth. It reminds me of the World
War II propaganda (I do not mean propaganda in a negative way) where “winning the war would safeguard American
culture and preserve order, while equality was implied as an outcome of other freedoms.” (The Challenge of Democracy
p 13) For example, also in the weekly address posted May 26, 2017, this stance is reflected in the following statement:
“It is our moral duty to keep our citizens safe and free, and to protect the right of every American to pursue their
dreams.
In America First Foreign Policy (under the issues tab) once again order is stressed while economic equality is implied. The
statement “defeating ISIS and other islamic terrorists will be our highest priority” clearly shows us that order is indeed
the priority of the Trump administration. “Next we will rebuild our military…our military dominance must be
unquestioned” also shows an emphasis on order. And here we see order and implied economic equality with “the world
will be more peaceful and prosperous with a stronger and more respected America.” Prosperity is again emphasized
here “we can bring jobs back to America’s shores, increase wages, and support U.S. manufacturing.” To me, a
prosperous America would mean all citizens would prosper, not just the upper echelon, therefore implying economic
equality. I also feel with prosperity brings about more freedom, as in having the money to do what you want and not be
beholden to anyone. The article ends with “on his watch, trade policies will be implemented by and for the people,” a
policy known only to democratic nations.
