A Critics Review
Susan Glaspell was inspired to write her play “Trifles" after covering a court case for the
local paper she was working for at the time. She is directly responsible for two of the three
presentations. She wrote the play “Trifles" and the short story “A Jury of Her Peers" which
is based on the play. The movie A Jury of Her Peers was an adaptation of Glaspell’s short
story; produced, directed, and edited by Sally Heckle. Does one presentation; play, short
story or movie, a better fit for the story than the other two? What was done right, and what
was done wrong in each venue? How well do they follow the play?
The play “Trifles" was written by Glaspell in 1916 and followed, quite well, the dialect of
that period. The play was inspired by a real trial of a woman being accused of killing her
husband as he slept. Glaspell changed the way the husband was killed but used the trial as
inspiration for her play. The play, “Trifles" is a short one scene play, yet, Glaspell was able
to quickly draw her audience in using well placed set direction, “(stops, his face twitches)"
and character dialog such as, “then I says, ‘Why, what did he die of?’ ‘He died of a rope
around his neck,’ says she" (“Trifles" 463). It should be said, that the play has only been
read and not seen performed. The reading of the play does allow the reader to use their
