The article “Ocean Cleanup Plastic Collector Heading Home. In Pieces.”, by Eric
Nagourney was a very interesting read. The article is about the Dutch organization, the
Ocean Cleanup, attempt to clean the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The Great Pacific Garbage
Patch is a garbage island that lies between California and Hawaii. The article explains that it
contains more than 80,000 tons of garbage. The device engineered by the organization is a
2,000-foot-long boom designed to clean up the trash. However, the article explains that
during a routine inspection, “an end-section of the boom almost 60 feet long – 18 meters –
had detached.”
