Weather Disaster: Hurricane Katrina
Hurricanes form in the Atlantic Ocean during September and October each year, and
luckily, do not make landfall frequently. While the detriment of Hurricane Harvey is still in full
swing, Hurricane Katrina is still the most detrimental hurricane to have ever hit in the United
States in terms of economy, destruction, brute strength, and its effects on planet Earth. As many
know, Katrina left thousands without food, water, shelter, or their lives over a 48 hour period. In
addition to its Category 5 rating, a combination of the towns in coastal Louisiana being below
sea level and the levies breaking, this hurricane left little behind, except for lessons learned to
prepare for the next great hurricane due to the Earth’s rapidly changing climate.
