Obesity is a Disease
In the United States, we have a great deal of controversy about obesity. Obesity is
defined as “having an excessive amount of body fat”, and is calculated using Body Mass Index
(BMI). A major debate today is whether obesity would be considered a disease. When
examining the statistics, one could draw the conclusion that obesity is definitely not a disease.
The reason being is that, obesity is very much preventable. It may lead to other diseases,
however is not a disease itself.
Being of larger size, is a choice. Most people choose to eat unhealthy foods, which
eventually causes them to be of heavier weight. Eating healthy is a lifestyle and obese people
have to adjust to such a challenge.
Obesity is a risk factor that opens the door for other illnesses. Never has it been reported that
someone could die from only being obese. Yet, people do depart from “obesity-related” diseases,
but not from obesity alone.
