OBESITY IN THE DSM-V
As of today obesity is considered a disease and not a disorder. I believe obesity
is both a disease and a disorder and should be included in the DSM-V. I believe this
because a lot of times overeating is causes from how we think and feel. There have
been studies that show disorders such as depression, bipolar and schizophrenia could
lead to over eating and less activity in people which in turn leads to obesity. Stress and
anxiety could also make people eat more than needed. People turn to food as a coping
strategy to make them feel better. This is why it should be in the DSM-V and not just
considered a disease. There are many factors that lead to obesity and mental illness is
one of them.
