Obesity in America
I am writing to you for an English assignment over an issue in the United States that I am
concerned about. Today, I would like to discuss the issue of obesity in America. Statistics show
that “More than 2 in 3 adults are considered to be overweight or obese” (National Institute of
Health 1) and “More than 1 in 6 children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are considered to be
obese” (National Institute of Health 1). Obesity has always been a problem, but personally I
believe that the situation is getting worse. Being corpulent can lead to serious health problems
that can even follow with death. Heart disease, diabetes, joint pain, and sleep disorders are all
factors that come out of being obese. Because of these problems, “76,488 deaths in 2016 were
due to factors of obesity” (NCHS 1). I believe that this problem can eventually be fixed. Obesity
mostly starts at a young age and then over time their weight slowly grows to be more. By airing
more commercials about eating fruits, vegetables, and healthy food over fast food commercials
could lead to more attention to the topic. More commercials over the statistics of obesity
diseases and death rates could also shine more of a light on the importance of eating healthy.
Parents can also help their kids maintain a healthy weight by “Reducing screen time and
limiting the use of TVs, computers, DVDs, and videogames because they limit time for physical
activity” (NIH 1). All of these solutions are a way to help prevent early death in America. Over
time if we do not take enough action, we will see more deaths due to children and adults being
overweight. The health of people in America should always be an importance to the
government. Finding more ways to keep America healthy will aid in saving the lives of the
young and old.
