Florence Nightingale is well known for her actions and essentially founding the current
nursing discipline after the Crimean war. Her popularity stemmed from going to the Crimea and
worked to assist sick and wounded soldiers. As Dennis (2016) pointed out, she was celebrated in
the press as a champion for providing patient care to the soldiers. During the war, Nightingale
pushed the government to make changes that would promote the soldiers’ welfare. As she was
championing for those changes, she initiated the nursing profession. Therefore, this paper seeks
to provide Nightingale’s historical background, her effect on professional nursing practice today,
and the future’s prediction of nursing needs based on her.
