The Neuron Structure:
The neuron structure consists of seven different parts. First there are extensions that branch off
of the neuron, these arm—like extensions are responsible for gathering information from other
electrons which are called dendrites. After the dendrites detect the information from
thousands of different electrons the information is then sent to the cell body. The cell body is
very similar to the human brain, its responsibility is to collect and decipher the information.
Next the cell body send that information to the axon, and the axon is responsible for sending
that information to other neurons. Some axons contain a fatty material called myelin sheath,
although not all axons contain this fatty material it acts as an insulator and aids to faster
movement of impulses along each axon. Also between parts of the myelin sheath there are
small gaps of bare axon which are called nodes of Ranvier and it is the site where action
potentials take place. Towards the end of the axons there are small nodes called terminal
buttons that send chemical signals from the neuron into the final part of the neuron which is
called the synapse. The synapse is where chemical communication occurs between neurons.
